Non-smoking bar or dance club WANTED

The bus driver knows he is prohibited from smoking on the bus and so does everybody else (the signs are posted clearly on every bus). Same goes with drinking and driving. You don't care about this until because of their actions an accident occurs and you or someone you love is hurt or killed. Bus drivers have been video taped reading newspapers while driving, listening to music via headphones thus putting the passengers at risk. When I'm on the bus, the last thing I want to worry about is whether the bus driver is drunk, high or distracted. When you chose to be a bus driver, you hold the safety of the passengers in your hands. In all fairness, there has been many bus drivers giving there life for the safety of the passengers. I've seen many videos of bus drivers being abuse by the passengers. Being a bus driver is a stressful job and my hats goes of to them but smoking, drinking or reading is simply not exceptable.

@HFCAMPO How do you know he was fined? Did they call you?

I submitted a written report with pictures. Although my main concern was the smoking, this guy really violated every possible rule and I had pictures to prove it. Apparantly, there is a rule where drivers can not drive while wearing sandals. When the driver was leaving the bus station, a guard came over and made him change his sandals. The guard stood and watched until he had changed. However, the driver put his sandals back on later on in the trip. I was curious and took pictures of his feet before and after the change. Then I took pictures of the driver reading some business cards while he was driving during heavy rain. I got 3 pictures with 3 different cards in his hands and he was using his wrists to drive while reading. Then I took pictures of the driver talking on the phone and another picture of him sending a mesage on the phone. And of course, I also took pictures of him chain smoking. All the pictures were very clear and up close.

I received a reply in the mail explaining about the fine and the suspension as well as a phone call THANKING me for sending the report. We were told that all this would be discussed at their next meeting. I was very impressed at how this matter was handled and we received a written reply in just 6 days. I don't know if this is the usual punishment or if he was made an example to others.

I don't know, maybe its better to take a nonsmoking bus to a nonsmoking movie theater/ church and get gun down by a legal gun owner.

your in the wrong country, please leave, go back and celebrate being PC there, please let China be China and not a clone of California, Colorado, Wisconsin or wherever. Go back take pics of your family driving while on their smart phones, report them to the police, get the Governors award.

please leave and let us enjoy, even suffer China for what it is, not what you want it to be.

Some people (expats) have so little understanding about why the central govt here passed the no smoking, no spitting, no dog meat, etc laws (right before the Olympics) but no one outside of 1st tiers ever gave a shit about that.

Find the place that's right for you, don't insist we all change to accommodate you, because you think your superior.

And isn't so sexy how many Yunnan women smoke and can drink you under the table, its so sexy.

Dont try to change Yunnan to fit you, move to where you fit.

@TICExpats I hope you never wind up in the very thing you want China to be China. We are not saying we don't love China. We are saying that specifically that no smoking is allowed in any bus for the common sense of it. You obviously don't understand foreigners. If you are a foreigner then shame on you. Maybe this issue is way over your head.

@ MODERATOR: please check TICexpats for his conduct on the forum.

@TICexpats: I created a thread hear some suggestions on a smoke free establishment. Smoking under closed public spaces is forbidden by law in all chinese territory.

I don't like the sarcastic tone of your post.
As a non-smoker I will continue to make sure the law stands, I will not leave Yunnan, or China. If you cannot respect the laws of this country, you will end up being deported.

@All:Last week, in a bus from Kunming to Tengchong, I had to personally take the cigarette out of the hand of the reserve bus driver (2 of them alternate shifts) and put it out on the floor. This was after I told him two times to put it out and was ignored. It generated a major commotion in the bus.

@TICexpats, again: Why don't you try smoking near me in an elevator or restaurant. I would enjoy teaching you some respect, boy.

I seriously doubt you can teach me anything, boy ? !!

but please respect the forum rules "Keep things civil and refrain from personal attacks."

As a foreign visitor in China, sure, one should respect the law, but more importantly, the culture. We all know that China is a totalitarian country, and some laws will therefore undoubtedly be fucked up, and worth ignoring (I bet the vast majority of all expats uses VPN to access blocked websites, for example). When it comes to culture, however, it is my belief that one should strive to understand, rather than condemn. To go around and tear the cigarettes out of chineses people's hands, or even snitching on them and thereby causing them great misfortune, is questionable behavior in my view, or even downright cruel. It's their country, it's up to them what they want to make of their laws; to come here as a foreigner and demand that they should do this and that is chauvinistic at the very least.
