Actually, Taichi IS a martial art - when taught by experts who can show you the martial applications of the art. Taichi is excellent at building your foundational stance power. Yang style is what most people see - the slow fluid movements. Fluidity is essential to maintaining balance and posture.

If that's a little slow - you may opt for Chen style - which intersperses dynamic strength and speed movements into the more traditional movements - great for kids. Both teach the more mental aspects of martial arts - control and relaxation of the mind during battle - essential elements of any martial art, including today's military training - remaining cool while under extreme duress.

There is a student who advertises for his/her teacher on gokm. He has a studio in the Beichen area and I believe also teaches at the Yunnan University - Green Lake campus.

don't worry about the location, you will find a coach/master, or like in most cases a master will find you.....somehow.
They have absolutely fabulous (if not the world best) taiji masters living in KMG, try to find a man called Yang Laoshi. He is incredible.
And who thinks that Taiji is not a martial art? For anyone that is unaware, Taiji is a complete and complex martial art and even, practicing the slow styles will prove extremely effective in fight. It's about study of movement, move implications, qi, breathing and repetition, doesn't matter how fast you practice the moves.
That counts for modern wushu as well, tumble in a few fights and imagine how surprised i was, that my good old gymnastics-Wushu helped me out in fights.

Famous location don't mean anything, I practices in Shaolin (Henan) and it's complete bollocks, I have seen the great super masters (last deciple of Yip Man or something) and a few other WingChun lessons in Honkong, an I wouldn't spend a dime on it....and they make you!!
I had a better coach in high school than those AMAZING HONGKONG W.C. MASTERS.

What a rip-off, I'm sure there are a few good ones in HK but you won't find them through associations and such stuff. You will find the right master coach, somehow or vice versa.

I went to Wudangshan to practice Taiji and I found a good school, in an old fortification/mansion but far away from the main gate and schools. Was excellent training, nice coaches and everything was perfect for 600 kuai a month, food lodging included

.......unfortunately cabbage everyday, which sucked, lead to a lot of farting in practice, the students loved it, qualifies as martial art, too but more of the biological warfare kind.

A good coach will see talent or skills and will feed it, but most coaches are just discouraged and bored and in for a quick buck. So you also need to be careful and change if you don't learn anymore.
And to be honest to start or revisit your favorite martial art i think for the first 6 month you are fine even with a senior martial artist as coach, don't think you need a Mega-Master to learn your stances etc.

plus,that gives you time to look around for a coach, when you made enough progress and ready to switch to a higher level coach.

are all kids there but some of the coaches are great expelaining every

tiny move to you. I trained with them for a short while (free of charge

-plenty of Winchun school in KMG, at least 3 around xiaoxi men (don;t know the exact location but ask a chinese friend to go online and find out)
-Takwondo and Karate is all over the place (gyms), some also offer Taiji but saw only one good class (downside=packed with students) in the gym on top of the parkson on nanpingjie.

Where did you learn Wing Chun, and for how long? Who is/was your sifu?

My name is James and I've studied Wing Chun for about 7 years now. I learned Wing Chun in Southern California from Sifu Adam Williss (still studying under him to this day). The lineage we study is the Leaung Sheung lineage which uses the soft approach to Wing Chun. Similar to Tai Chi, we use body structure, proper alignment, and timing to accomplish what we need to do in a self-defense situation. What this means is that a small, slow, and weak person can overcome a larger, stronger, and faster person with the proper training.
