Very good free Chinese self-study materials

For books, each publisher or series usually comes in 3 or 6 books divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Pick a few series that match your Chinese level and see which one fits your learning needs best. Once you are comfortable with one, just pick the rest of the levels in that series.

I'd like to recommend something to improve reading skills. It sounds a LITTLE technical to set up, you need to install a webserver on your local PC, but its a piece of cake really.
The software is at

lwt.sourceforge.net

Its for all languages. You import any text you want, then for each word or character you can state how well you know it. This builds your library of known (or unknown) words, and they will be colourcoded every time you try a new text. Sometimes i find just looking at a text overwhelming, even if i fully understand it and know all the characters, but colourcoding the characters like this really helps break it down.
