George Lynch on his trip to China last October

Hiketsu (13 posts) • 0

One of my favorite guitarists visited the east coast of China last October to promote some of the gear the he endorses. Sadly, he did not have the greatest experience.

Hopefully, some might find this of interest, or thought provoking.

**What's it like being in China?**

China is not a place i would go to vacation!

Beijing and Shanghai are interesting cosmopolitan cities but Ive been to many smaller and less familiar cities that ive had to travel over dirt mountain roads in buses full of slaves and chickens to get to. toilet paper doesn't exist..you do your biz in a whole in the ground..the cities are filthy..not in a cool dusty sense..but in a heavily toxic and polluted sense

Its also obviously a communist country and I've had negative experiences with the authorities because they consider some forms of art...including rock music..to be subversive..

Ive also experienced what I consider to be racism there..There's a lot of anti -western, especially anti American, resentment..i was not allowed to go certain places because of that. I sometimes had to sit in segregated areas of restaurants. I was not allowed into pool areas at hotels. Chinese men have a way of showing they're distaste for you by spitting at your feet and bumping into you as you walk by them on the street!

And lastly the food is friggin crazy..nothing like what we think Chinese food is..picture a whole un skinned bullfrog with a tomato in its mouth and a spoon..that's dinner..with a side of crickets! and to drink? a bottle of chines wine with a dead snake coiled up inside of it...mmmmm! just want a snack? how about black moldy 100 year old fermented eggs or pickled chicken feet?

I actually ended up in a hospital in China by accidentally drinking the water. The hospital was full of people with no limbs, screaming and crying, walls with holes punched into them and splattered with blood, etc. they called my wife to ask her where to ship the pine box!

other than that China's awesome

My response:

I'm sorry to hear that George had such a rough experience in China. It made me angry to hear how he was treated by people, and the authorities.

I live in Kunming, Yunnan- a fairly rural and less developed area in the southwest of the country. As an American, I have rarely experienced the kind of racist behavior that George mentions. Most Chinese I encounter follow the Socialist principle that all people are equals, not lesser or greater.

There is however a percentage of "low class bone heads," and by the numbers, even if it accounted for only 1% of the population here, that is still more than 13 million people!

The pollution is a real problem, especially on the east coast of the country. It is quite sad, and there doesn't seem to be an answer on how to clean things up.

And if you thought foreigners are treated poorly... the bribery, police abuse of power for money, and organized crime here directed at ordinary citizens will make you cry.

The saddest thing about George's visit however is that there is a vast audience here eager to hear more from him. The guitarists here that I have introduced George's music to have dropped their previous convictions that Satriani, Petrucci, Vai, and Malmsteen were where it is at... and have become die-hard Lynch fans! The guitarist here can play their asses off, but never think about their tone from what I have heard and seen so far.

I jam with one virtuoso music teacher in Kunming and his favorite songs to play now are "Don't Close Your Eyes," "It's Not Love," and "Kiss of Death." Man, we have a blast! The guy can play any instrument you can think of, but his true love is guitar... as it is for many musicians in China.

So George... don't give up on China so fast. You owe it to the world to teach Chinese guitarists about tone research, and of course the social etiquette of not spitting at foreigners feet, or bumping into them. Although, they commonly do this too each others in daily passing...

Hi, George Lynch here.

I'm just taking a minute out of my busy schedule to give you some more informed opinions about China.

I've got to make it quick though as I'm preparing for my covert mission into the hotel swimming pool. I'm hoping that if I wear a thick enough coat of Beijing opera makeup I might fool the bao'an into thinking I'm Chinese and be allowed to have a swim. After that I'll probably be a bit hungry so put on my yellow foreigner ID badge and go and sit in the alien's section of my local shaokao bullfrog restaurant, hoping that they might actually give me some food rather than bumping into me and spitting at my feet in disgust. It is rather exhausting being constantly hounded by the secret police for my subversive art but then it gives me satisfaction to know that I am the greatest living threat to China's national security since Celine Dion. I do wish they'd feed me something more than bullfrog every day, its getting a little tiresome but I guess they just resent me for my extra large belly. Oh f**k - I just drank some water by mistake - where's the US consulate?

Having never heard the guy's music I'm judging him purely on his ill-informed rant. Its seems clear that he came to China with preconceived ideas based perhaps loosely on real perceptions and qualms foreigners have had about China, spent the entire trip trembling behind the sofa in his 5 star suite, and on his return to civilization promptly embellished those perceptions and qualms to the point of them being total nonsense in the vain hope that some impressionable gullible fans might believe that he's seen something of China.

Hiketsu (13 posts) • 0

First of all... he made these comments a year after his trip at his fans' request in the course of monthly questions they give him to answer online.

"he came to China with preconceived ideas based perhaps loosely on real perceptions and qualms foreigners have had about China"

I would argue the opposite... that he came here with a blank slate, (after traveling to many parts of the world including Asia many times over) and simply stated what he saw.

George is 53. He is a Master Teacher. He is well-groomed and doesn't have an "extra large belly."

The fact is that he was treated like shit by people during his trip. When Jackie Chan went to Japan, he had similar experiences. Would you like to blame that all on his preconceived notion of how horrible the Japanese are?

"spent the entire trip trembling behind the sofa in his 5 star suite"

Yeah... that's exactly what he did.... especially when he was on that disgusting bus traveling over dirts roads into the more remote areas during his trip.

Anyway, I digress, return to your own "uniformed" careless comments about those of whom you know nothing.

I feel disappointed as a resident of this community that George was treated as he was, and I simply wish he had not met with such uncomfortable situation on his first trip here.

China has a lot to offer, as do those "experts" that come here to share their skills.

You are of course absolutely right that my comments are careless and I did declare my lack of knowledge about George in my last post. However I fail to see how his comments are any less careless or ill-informed; or indeed why his background, skills or age let him off the hook.

I'm not at all surprised that Jackie Chan had a bad time in Japan - the relationship between Japan and China is depressingly bad. It makes me very angry to see how Japanese people are often treated when visiting China - my room mate in Beijing many years ago frequently pretended he was Korean. Its equally disturbing to see how foreigners are often treated in the US and UK. But George's comments went over the top and bordered on the farcical. Although not sure as my knowledge of Jackie Chan is as ill-informed as my knowledge of George, I would hope that Jackie Chan would not publicly dismiss an entire race of people on his fansite based on his bad experiences. Moreover embellish them to the extent of writing halftruths about food and segregation. We all know that there are some exotic food items available in certain restaurants (many of which are actually worth a try) but to imply that you're going to find it everywhere, moreover that it is impossible to find standard chinese dishes is nonsense. I'd be really surprised if anyone really was turned away from a hotel swimming pool for being a foreigner.
I would hope his age, experience and worldliness would help him to realise that, as a musician/celebrity/teacher/public figure it is not particularly responsible to tar 1/4 of the world's population with the same brush. I concur that it is disappointing that he had such a difficult time in China but are you not even slightly disappointed that someone you clearly respect so much has given as little thought to his comments as I have to mine?
Anyway, as I admitted, you are right that my comments are careless and uninformed and I only wrote them as I was staggered by what seemed equally careless and uninformed comments from a musician/celebrity/teacher/public figure. I've seen similar comments made in internet forums about China by people who've clearly never been and so assumed George was coming from a similar position. To his credit he didnt go so far as to mention that every person in China eats aborted embryos; something I've seen written many times in similar kinds of posts.
Anyway, sorry if I offended, it wasn't personal.
All the best,

Greg.

Yeah,

Whoever, this George Lynch is, if he has ever been to China, clearly made no effort to understand locals.

I mean taking it personal when someone spits in your general direction. Just another ignorant american.

I bet Greg is right and he never left his hotel room, except to puch his merchandise at coreographed events.

Oh, he's a master teacher, then I guess he can't be ignorant or closed minded right Hiketsu? At least no one shot him which we all know is a common occurence in his country. Even the kids have guns there!

Oh the Chinese has the temerity to eat something you found disgusting George, well maybe you should just never come back that will show them--I mean they will all greatly miss your presense, if they even know who you are, I mean at least one poster is familiar with you.

And while I'm at it, what kind of person goes to fan sites for third tier rock stars. I'm sorry Hiketsu, maybe you will just have to go to America to have a chance to suck off George in person. What a shame.

The only thing more pathetic than a grown man--I'mguessing your somewhere around 34ish Hiketsu--who goes to fan sites is an a**hole who goes on web forums to pick fights.

I am certainly glad to be niehter. Good riddance to this Geoff Lynch, we certainly don't need his kind here!

According to a myspace blog bearing his name and picture, it seems that Mr Lynch may have had some health problems before actually coming to China ....

GEORGE LYNCH Rushed To Hospital After Reportedly Collapsing At Las Vegas Show - Apr. 22, 2006

According to a couple of eyewitness reports from last night's (April 21) GEORGE LYNCH show in Las Vegas, Nevada, the former DOKKEN guitarist was rushed to the hospital after taking ill 30 minutes into his band's performance at the Empire Ballroom. The following report was submitted to BLABBERMOUTH.NET by Robert Beaudette of RobertSellsLasVegas.com:

"It's 2AM in Las Vegas, Friday night, April 21. I just got home from the George Lynch show at the Empire Ballroom, where Lynch and bandmates Vinny Appice, Marten Andersson, and singer Andrew Freeman were in great form for all of 30 minutes. The band left the stage for a drum solo, after which a club rep announced from the stage that Lynch had taken ill and was unable to continue. Right before exiting the stage, he appeared FINE, laughing and smiling with his band.

"I rushed outside to beat the crowd to the valet, where minutes later an ambulance and firetruck arrived on the scene, and Lynch, now naked for some reason and strapped to a gurney, was hustled into the ambulance. His bandmates and a few fans were gathered around, obviously concerned and in shock. Lynch's eyes were closed on the stretcher, and a person apparently in the band's crew said the guitarist was unconcious before the paramedics arrived.

"Friends called local rock radio station KOMP 92.3 for an update, no news available yet..."

More information as it becomes available.

Whatever level of proficiency this man may have with his guitar being put aside. Classic racist mofo! Sounds like he segregated himself long ago. No mention of even one good experience in China and of its culture or hospitality? Come on...where is that dude coming from? Send him back to the virtual land of the free and may he never come return. Who needs that kind of representation of the States anyway? Has been buffoon!

Hiketsu (13 posts) • 0

Aren't you the one who just asked about heating in Kunming? Good luck! Better stay in "the virtual land of the free" if you want that.

Seriously, the guy was treated like shit here. Is that so unusual. Yes, there are cultural differences that may be partially responsible for his lack of understanding here. However, this is not the first foreign country he has visited.

"Has been?" I guess that is why he still is getting articles written about his playing, and young new guitarists are interested in learning from him.

I'm sure there are more constructive things to do in this city than to argue about whether or not George Lynch is being entirely honest in regards to his experiences in China, especially by people that have no idea whom he is.
