Before planning to get a job teaching English, make sure you meet the requirements for a work visa. At the moment a Bachelor Degree, a tesol/tefl/celta certificate -you can easily get one online!, 2 years work experience, and a background check certificate from your home country are required. Rules keep changing, China is about to introduce a new system to issue work permit to foreigners. if you are not a native speaker (better: if you do not hold a passport from an English-speaking country) rules are much stricter, and keep changing as well. Having said that, if getting a work visa is not a problem, you could easily find a private tutor or a language exchange partner to help you learn Chinese (lots of ad here in the listings section)
A slightly different and cheaper approach to what others have said is an online option.
Yes, not as good as the classroom but maybe you can cram in a fair bit before you arrive with this style to give you a head start learning when you do get to Kunming.
I mention www.transparent.com/ as I just found them a month ago and they do seem to be on a totally different level to any other online courses I've tried and I'm actually liking using their site.
Not class(room) but good ;o)
