Been doing research into different areas in China to get a start in IT, was hoping to get some information on Kunming...

What's the expat community like?
How is the nightlife?
How much of a hassle would a weekend trip to Shanghai/Beijing be?
Any general info on the city/Yunnan Province...?

Sorry, the only one I could answer was the Shanghai/Beijing question as I travel alot.

Did you do any travelling in Yunnan? I've heard it and Guizhou have a lot of natural beauty to it

Rather than ask lazy tedious general questions as if you were helpless get on the net and google "yunnan" "kunming" "xishuangbanna" you will hours of stuff to look at.

Kunming may not be a good place to 'get a start' in anything technical, let alone IT.

You're right Geezer.. why go to a forum designated to the city and ask questions of people who probably have experience in the area?

Yes, next door Guizhou has some nice scenery and minority villages set in nice scenery. Yunnan is already known for this.

But more practically, neither Guiyang or Kunming are hubs for IT. Xian and Hangzhou are hubs for IT with highspeed rail weekend trips to Beijing and Shanghai, respectively.

But if you have your own IT gig/company, and all you're not phased by China's constant harassment of vpns, then Kunming is viable choice. Guiyang, not so much.
