Hi, any recs?
My preferences so far would be Lushi, Yuanyang (although it would be all green/lush), Shaxi. I want to try the mushroom hotpot and bugs since it should be available. I'm into simple, beautiful places that are more or less untouched. Any places with street art and the likes?
Give me an idea of how much time you have so I can give you a better reply. Do you have the entire summer or just a few small blocks of time?
July is the best time to visit puzhehei
NO way, PZH is extremely crowded between May and September. Best time is Oct - Apr when you can be alone in the lake.
I will have 3 and a half weeks to explore.
Yeah debated the puzhehei idea since the water lilies will be in bloom but then idea of crowds is a huge turn off.
Here is one suggestion - The 3 ancient salt Towns of Yunnan. They are not crowded and great for history buffs.

I am a history buff so I have visited all the Historical and Cultural Sites of Yunnan (Kunming). Some of these places are NOT very popular so they are not crowded. If you dont want to travel so far then you can look for these places in and around Kunming.

If you want to venture a bit further you can look for The Historical cities, towns and villages of Yunnan. Be prepared to travel to many out-of-the-way places to find them because they are located all over Yunnan.

Here is a link to the Stone Dragon Dam right here in XiShan District. However, you will have to go to Anning to reach it. This place is really amazing as it is the first Hydro-power station in CHINA!

Tuanshan near Jianshui has lotus fields as well. See:

July is a great time for seeing lush green rice paddies almost everywhere you go in Yunnan.
It's the rainy season, but most days you get a mix of rain and sun and clouds and this can form some spectacular sights in the mountains.
This is a gorgeous time to visit Diqing Prefecture. The grasslands and mountains are full of wildflowers. The high altitude rhododendrons are in bloom. And Shangri-La valley is bright yellow with rapeseed.
I agree with the patchy rain/cloud/sun making some gorgeous sights. We just returned from Lugu lake this morning and had a lot of rain and drizzle there. There were plenty of clear sunny spots though, and every time I looked across the lake it was different. Plus there is flowering sea(lake)weed which makes me unnaturally giddy.
