In Sweden there are some traditions that have been kept for as long as people can remember. Midsummer is one of them and Lucia is another. However, Lucia was then called something different and it is the winters equivalent to Midsummer, which means it is the darkest and longest night of the year. During the Mediaeval time in Sweden this was a night of danger and you’d best stay awake all night to be safe. It was also the day that all preparations for the winter (Christmas) should be finished. When Sweden became a christian country all traditions were renamed and remade to fit in with the new religion, hence the name Lucia, who was a girl who lived on the Italian island Sicily around year 300 and became a saint after her death. In the beginning of the 20th century it was decided more distinctly how Lucia should be celebrated and this is how our Scandinavian Choir will perform it on TCG Nordica’s annual Lucia concert. The choir will perform a variety of traditional Lucia songs to bring light and hope that Christmas soon will come.
