Last Saturday, a large forest fire broke out in Anning, 30 kilometres to the southwest of Kunming. The smoke could be seen in Kunming.
1600 firefighters were initially mobilised to fight the fire, their number was increased to 3000 by Sunday. Together with the deployment of helicopters and planes to douse the fire with water, further spread of the fire has been halted but it is as yet not extinguished. Several villages are under threat from the fires. A highly flammable combination of high temperatures, strong wind and the worst drought Yunnan has seen in years caused the fire. No casualties were reported.© Copyright 2005-2023 GoKunming.com all rights reserved. This material may not be republished, rewritten or redistributed without permission.
