I agree, this guy was not significant, probably a nutcase, and a lot of people dislike the US government. But which people's hero might he have thought he could be?
If you need visa office services, Chiang Mai is also good.
Viet Nam border at Hekou by overnight train at about 11PM from Kunming main station, back the next afternoon leaving Hekou about 4PM. Most nationalities need a visa, which costs 300rmb (get it at VN consulate in Kunming, takes 2-3 days), but the cost is way overridden by the low cost of the overall trip. I'd advise a hard sleeper to Hekou, hard seat coming back. Train only takes about 6 hours.
@Vicar: (1) Business?? (2) 'In today's real world' - well, what else can you do? However, by the time they grow up TODAY'S real world will be history, and modern life will be out of date.
They also might benefit from coming into contact with diverse points of view, perhaps in a school (though I'm not sure Chinese schools are too good at this - but then what schools are?), which would help them learn Chinese too.
Best wishes.

I'm not a health foody but the few meals I've had here have been really good and, yeah, I'll be happy to go back alone to sample all the rest of them. It's also not a bad place from which to people-watch the street below.
Environmentalists sue Yunnan hydropower developers
Posted bySounds like they've got a case, although I'm sure there's another side to it. One important thing, however, is that groups like this can force some transparency on a government that needs it, if it is to govern properly.

Kunming versus the cold snap
Posted byHard to imagine Kunming as a good choice for Winter Olympics, but I can imagine its possibility as some kind of political/diplomatic decision. Of course that is not, from a sports perspective, what national or international sports spectaculars should be about - but how long has it been since that was the real consideration, anyway?
