Dali - Baoshan = 2.5 hours
Baoshan - Tengchong = 2.5 hours
It has been one year since I went to Tengchong so this road is new to me as it was still under construction last time I visited. The new highway ride is only 2.5 hours as oppossed to the 4-5 hours it was in the past. There is still a 12 km segment of the highway between Wuhe and Long Jiang that has not been completed so all traffic must use the old 2 lane mountain road which takes about 30 minutes. There is a huge mudslide on this old road that has not been cleaned up so it delays the traffic even more. I enjoyed the 2.5 hour ride not only because it is much faster but mailnly because I did not have to see, hear and smell the chinese people barf along the mountain road because of the many twists and turns.
I recently took this new expressway on a midsized bus from Liuku to Tengchong.
It's much faster and smoother than the potholed, winding old road over Gaoligongshan.
However, when later in the same week I took a large sleeper bus back to Kunming from Tengchong, I was surprised that it took the old road instead of the new expressway. I asked the driver why, and he said buses like his don't yet have permission to take the new expressway. I asked him, then why did my bus from Liuku take it just days ago? He said that midsized buses are okay, but large buses are not, because the new road "isn't safe".
Let me get this straight? The winding, narrow, steep, potholed old road over the mountain is "safe" but the new, wide, modern expressway isn't?
Has anyone traveled from Baoshan to Tengchong recently? How is the new road mentioned last year?
I used the new road last year - read my previous post.
bluegrass14, the road is exactly the same today as it was as HFCAMPO and I described it a year ago.
The unfinished section over the Longjiang River is still unfinished and will be until about 2016
