I'm searching for an update on the transit project from Weixi to Fugong. I would love to hop over from one side of the mountains - Deqen, Lijiang - to the other - the NuJiang river - without going south through Baoshan. There are obviously huge natural obstacles in the way, but I don't suspect that will stop the development of this road long-term. Any information you have (including the 'as of' date) would be much appreciated.

I will also be taking public transport, I don't have a car or bike. If the road is 'completed', but no cars are allowed on it yet, I would like to hear that detail as well.

This road is nowhere near complete. They haven't even begun construction yet. It is merely in the planning stages. Unless you want to hike over the mountain, you'll need to go through Baoshan (not actually Baoshan city, but Baoshan prefecture).

Also, you will want to avoid the Lancang Valley south of Weixi. I was there a few weeks ago on my bike and trust me, it is in horrible condition. The new road through the valley is still very much under construction, and the old road is shot to hell, blocked in several locations by deadly landslides. The road is only open to through traffic one day a week, and then its a horrible, muddy, potholed ride.

North of Weixi, the Lancang road is finished and great, but south of Weixi, avoid it like the plague!
