If you decided to make the trip to Bangkok then I would have no hesitation in recommending the specialist 'Rutnin' eye hospital: www.rutnin.com

I find it difficult to trust doctors, surgeons and medicine in general. When I have no choice I get three opinions. Recently I got three identical diagnosis from Kunming Eye Hospital, Moorfields Eye Hospital London and Rutnin. Surgery was offered by one, recommended by a second and a clear 'no surgery needed' by Rutnin who taught me how to manage the problem.

First, have no fear about Kunming Eye Hospital to get a diagnosis. I was treated very well there, two doctors, specialists (people in white coats) took time to fully explain the problem and I was not charged.

If the procedure is a common one I would say a Chinese doctor would have done it many times more than a western doctor with the same work years. Hygiene and the absolute no responsibilty taken by the hospital are the main things to consider.

A member of my family has considerable experience of driving. Must have carried out the procedure of getting into a car and propelling it forward thousands of times. Lovely person but a lousy and dangerous driver. Bus drivers here plough the same route countless times a day, day in day out. The considerable driving experience doesn't appear to prove they are better than others with lesser time behind the wheel. On the contrary, it appears to make them blind to the unexpected. Doing something more often doesn't necessarily mean you do it better. Just a general comment and no reflection on local doctors one way or the other.

@johannes
If you have to ask - in reality, you already know the answer - it's a gamble.

I was in a Chinese hospital in Beijing for a month, and the doctors and nurses were very good at their jobs (although the facilities were horrible). I think what Yuantongsi said is true: Chinese doctors have many more patients than Western doctors, just because of the sheer number of people in China. They are very experienced. Whatever you choose, good luck!

red cross hospital on Qinnian road is fairly good, my mom had surgery there years back, everything came out pretty well. what you believe comes to you, pick you choice.

Don't assume there is the experience for more complex precedures. The provincial hospital advised me not to have heart surgery in China, or if I do to stick to one or two named surgeons in Shanghai/Beijing.

One question to ask yourself is 'How necessary is the surgery?'.

China may not be the cheapest if cost is a consideration. Thailand can often be cheaper.
