I'm going to be bringing my road bike to Kunming in August and was wondering if there are any (non-mountain biking) cycling clubs in the city that go out for regular rides?
Alternatively, does anyone know of any routes/mountains with good roads around Kunming?
Thanks!
Cycling clubs run by locals are growing in number. You would find it easier if you spoke Chinese.
There are also a couple of bike shops that do this kind of thing.
Fantastic, thanks. My Chinese is just about good enough to inquire in bike shops when I get to Kunming.
Most of the clubs (if not all) are mountain bike clubs but they often tend to stick to paved roads. Modern road bikes were a rare sight here just 5 years ago but as the roads have improved so have the number of road bikes. The point is, it's best to ask at the shops/clubs and don't be put off by the local guys turning up on their mountain bikes. Failing that, there are loads of good road rides around here and plenty of mountains if you like that sort of riding. There are quite a few people who just ride with mates (like me).
Forrestfire,
Curious how your cycling is getting along in Kunming.
My son will be in unit there next fall and I'm considering bringing a bike with me.
I think you can buy good bikes here, built to your specifications.
There are a lot of road bikes nowadays. One common thin tyre route is (partly or fully) around Dianchi Lake. Another is a trip to Fuxian Lake, then around the lake. Another is northwest to Fumin, then southwest to Anning via the hot springs, then back to Kunming. I have most of these (everything except the bottom of Dianchi Lake), and you shouldn't have any problems on a road bike. That said, Chinese road surfaces are not up to foreign standards of repair so be careful - you can easily cycle in to a huge hole that isn't marked and wasn't there yesterday.
