Forums > Food & Drink > ErKuai (耳块) Recipes?!?
Hi! A few friends and I who formerly lived in Kunming and now live on the west coast of the US have been craving some 耳块鸡, and maybe some 烧耳块. Alas, San Franisco's selection of Yunnan cuisine and ingredients is limited.
Knowing that ErKuai (耳块) is essentially some sort of pounded glutinous rice cake, we attempted to replicate the process with mediocre results.
Does anyone know have a recipe for making 耳块 from scratch or possibly know of a sufficient alternative?
Thanks!

Forums > Living in Kunming > Shipping from Kunming to the US
I forgot to ask, does anybody have any experience shipping packages to the US, who might know what the restricted contents are by China or US customs?
The woman at the post office said there could be no liquids, but I'm wondering about things like pirated DVDs, coffee beans, etc.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Shipping from Kunming to the US
I went to the post office and did some research, so I thought I'd share the info here in case anyone else is looking:
Through the postal service, there seem to be 3 options to ship to the US:
*Surface (the cheapest), which costs Y83.5 for up to 1kg plus Y20/additional kg, with a max weight of 30kg. [I was told this option takes about 3 months to reach its destination]
*SAL (Surface Air-Lifted), which costs Y104.6 for up to 1kg plus Y41.1/additional kg, with a max weight of 30kg. [I was told this option takes about 1-1.5 months to reach its destionation]
*Air, which costs Y158.5 for up to 1kg plus Y95/additional kg, with a max weight of 30kg.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Shipping from Kunming to the US
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has any insight as to what is the cheapest way to ship packages from Kunming to the US? I'm moving back to the States, and I have too much stuff to bring on the plane. I don't so much care how quickly it gets to its destination (up to several months would be ok), but I'm more concerned about the price.
Any suggestions?

Forums > Travel Yunnan > Direct Flight From Kunming to Kathmandu
Just wanted to point out that I just checked on Ctrip, and there were flights available. (Make sure you select international). Also, Ctrip is definitely at least somewhat geared towards foreigners... they even have an English hotline, which would also probably not be a bad way to go about booking (I've sometimes found better deals over the phone than online anyway)

Kunming > Vintage Café
茴转时光The first couple times I went to Vintage Cafe (early 2010), I was rather under-enthused.
Lately, however, I've given it another try and been pleasantly surprised.
The menu has a great selection of fruit juices and smoothies, and portions seem to be more than generous.
I certainly feel like I get more bang for my buck here than at many of the other cafes (especially Sal's).
The enormous gratin meals cost about Y30 and include a small salad and a plate of bread.
The salads are also quite good--I'm fond of the Vietnamese dressing.
Worth giving another shot if you've disappointed in the past.
