If my husband has a student visa is it possible for me to get a visa to accompany him without being attached to a school? Does any one have any experience with this? Thanks!

I've never sorted out my own visa before, I've always done it through a language school. What do I do, just go along with all the usual stuff like registration and photo and my husband's passport with the visa in it?
