    • I'm new to Kunming, and would love to find other salsa dancers out there if there are any. Is there a place to go in Kunming to dance salsa? Or are there fellow salsa dancers who'd like to find a venue to start up a weekly salsa dancing night in Kunming?

    • I'm also interested! I love latin music and know how to dance Salsa (a little). Unfortunately, don't know a place where they play that kind of music... we could call on the Latino/Spanish community in Kunming, I'm sure they have private dancing activities at least.

    • nice to know there are others out there interested in Salsa!

michael2006, i'm a follow (female) looking for a lead (male). I can do the lead part for very basic steps and turns if there are people who want to learn.

it'd be great to know if there are enough interested out there to put together a salsa party sometime!

    • Another interested party here... Realise this might be a bit of a stretch but there is a good area to dance in Green Lake Park and it's usually empty in the morning and evenings. If anyone has the music and a decent sound system... we could shake up the neighbourhood!

so who is in to bring some latin spirit to kunming?

I know this is cheeky, but we have the facilities at the Hump in Jinma fang. If anyone wants to play music, please let me know and we could organise some drink specials or anything else you might need for a good party.

    • I prefer to just dance but if there's enough interest, I could teach a basic class say before a Hump salsa party...for FREE! Although I'm not a professional instructor, I have taught informally and have danced over 10 years mostly in San Francisco, Singapore, and Sydney.

I'll talk to Mark or someone else at the Hump about their venue and see how they can help spread the word on the next party.

    • Spoke to Mark last night. There have been Brazilian and other latin type parties successfully held at the Hump. He's willing to let us set up a salsa night anytime except tues & thurs (when he has his own house band playing).

Are there preference to doing this on the weekend (fri/sat night) or on a quieter night such as wed or sunday? If no feedback within the next couple of days, I'll ask Mark about promoting next wednesday, June 2.

    • I've been to a Latin dance night at Hump and thought the dance space was really small. Do you think the Hump would be willing to move the tables in front of the stage and bar out (not just push them to the side)? If there are really going to be a lot of us dancing and a few people learning we'll need plenty of dance floor space so we're not knocking into each other and stepping on toes. I'd go next Wednesday if this really happens. Wednesdays and Sundays work for me.

    • Glad to hear the positive responses! I agree it's a small floor but they will move tables aside and maybe off the floor (some tables look extremely big and heavy and may not be movable). Wednesdays should be less crowded and give us more space. I'll check with Mark about starting lessons at 8PM and then dancing from 9PM-11PM or later since it is a weekday. If things work out well, we can have another gathering soon and go even later.

    • Getting some responses! I can ask to start salsa back at the Hump next wednesday Sept 15th. Could I get a commitment from both of you to join? Even if it's only 3 of us to start out, more people usually participate after they see a group learning/dancing. Of course, invite more folks too! We'll start at 8PM again when it's more quiet and we can practice with a little privacy.

I have lots of Salsa music, and it's quite possible that we can do some Salsa at the Hump again. Not quite sure if I can make it to the Hump this Wed (travelling, jet lag, moving in, etc), but it would be nice to catch up sometime.
If I can't make it on Wed, you can ask the bar staff if you can plug in your iPod. Wed is a god night for that (ie. not usually any other DJs). Ben

There are not many people dancing Salsa in KM as far as I know, and no Salsa places that I know of.

If anybody is interested in reviving a little Salsa group, let me know. We might get some dance space at The Hump on a quiet night (during the week), although the floor is quite small.
