Hey everyone,
I'm new to the forums!
Does anyone have any first hand, or second hand, experience with the "Japanese experience" in Kunming?
In July Sankei Newspaper, a particularly right-wing and sensational Japanese newspaper mind you, ran an article about a shop in Kunming that had a sign reading basically, "dogs and Japanese need not enter."
Article Link here - Japanese only
http://sankei.jp.msn.com/[...]I'm sure that this is an extreme example and doesn't happen everyday, and maybe even the sign isn't there anymore... but has anyone heard of Japanese being the target of any hateful, or even just annoying, discrimination while living in or traveling through Kunming or the Yunnan area?
I ask because I'll be moving to Kunming in Jan with my wife, who happens to be Japanese, and just wondering if she should expect to catch any flak from time to time.
Thanks for any advice!

It happens more often than you think. I've seen a few electric bikes with funny plates lambasting the Japanese.
I had a few Japanese classmates before when I was studying Mandarin and they seemed to be alright. I'm sure they weren't out partying in Kundu or anything like that, but they weren't targeted exclusively as long as they didn't open their mouths, I suppose.
You'll find middle-aged people don't give a damn about the Japanese and it's usually only brain-washed uber nationalistic kids with nothing better to do. When they go home they have fun on their playstation 2 while watching Dragon Ball and eating instant noodles BUT F$#K THE JAPANESE ;)
You and your wife should be fine.

Discrimination and bias of of any kinds exist in both China and Japan and anywhere in the world, too. But still there are more friendly and peace loving people out there.Despite what you have found from Sankei,Kunming is definitely safe for Japanese.
My teacher back in college,Miss Suzuki, who is from Fujisawa,Kanagawa Prefecture,is probably the most famous social activist in Kunming. She has lots of students and has just started a speech contest among universities in Kunming. She herself is just the symbol of friendship between Kunming and Japan.
Wish good luck.
