So I contacted KUST and asked them some questions about getting a student visa. I told them I currently have a work visa (I'm currently an EFL teacher in China). All they said was "sorry we can't admit you to the university because we can't change a work visa to a student visa." Really helpful. It's like they are actively discouraging people from attending the university.
Does anybody have any experience with this? Can't I just go to Hong Kong to apply for a student visa? Or get a tourist visa, come to Kunming, and then change it to a student visa?
Experience - no.
But I've had informal talks with local officials when I asked a couple of 'what if' questions.
What if I complete my next contract and I want to move to a
travel visa, would I have to leave? No.
What if I chose to study at xxx language school, would I have to leave and apply for a study visa?
No.
First, I assume you are currently in another province and therefore the situation may be different.
Secondly, I am aware that the answers above were (probably) correct at the time of asking which was fairly recent.
Nearer the time I will make more concrete plans and get my answers in black and white directly from the people who know, i.e. the PSB.
And if I was going to study in, Guizhou for example, I would nip over there and get the answers from source.
I wouldn't have posted this were you already receiving a stream of answers, as it is, even those who are always eager to help are probably just shrugging their shoulders.

Did I breach forum etiquette or something with my last post? It got two down votes and I'm not really sure why...I was just asking some simple questions related to the forum topic...
Shrugging because we simply have no answers for your query. I wouldn't be overly concerned about the other stuff, it's a bit like the currency, you could have been three up while you slept. :-)
