Magnitude 5 Zhaotong earthquake causes fatalities

In the evening of last Monday, May 18, an earthquake jolted Qiaojia county in Zhaotong, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

Two people were killed — with the death toll later rising to four — and dozens were injured when the magnitude 5 earthquake hit and roads, water and electricity supplies and dwellings suffered damage. The epicentre of the earthquake was at a depth of eight kilometres. It was felt in Zhaotong, Huize, Xuanwei and Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture. One person was trapped under the debris.

Rescue forces have rushed to the quake zone to provide emergency disaster relief and secondary disaster prevention.
