Purim party this Saturday

By in News on

Kunming doesn't have the nightlife of China's larger cities such as Shanghai or Beijing, but it does have its moments. One of the better parties of the last few years has been the Purim party, which will be held this Saturday night at the Hump in Jinma Biji Fang on Jinbi Lu.

As before, a costume is required for the Purim party, which this year will feature DJs Christian (Sweden) and Frank (France). A 25-yuan cover charge includes free selected drinks all night.

What does the Jewish holiday of Purim celebrate? Here's the story according to Wikipedia, via Answers.com:

"Purim is a joyous Jewish holiday that commemorates the deliverance of Persian Jews from Haman's plot to exterminate them, as recorded in the biblical Book of Esther. It is characterized by public recitation of the Book of Esther, giving mutual gifts of food and drink, giving charity to the poor, and a celebratory meal (Esther 9:22); other customs include drinking alcohol, wearing of masks and costumes, and public celebration.

Purim is celebrated annually on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar. (In cities that were walled in the time of Joshua, including Jerusalem, Purim is celebrated on the 15th of the month, known as Shushan Purim). As with all Jewish holidays, Purim begins at sundown on the previous secular day."
