Does anyone have any experience with Dali University (aka Dali XueYuan)? I'm considering taking language classes there fall semester, but have recently heard some negative reviews. Specifically, I'm interested in the quality of instruction and availability of classes for intermediate to advanced-level Chinese. (I'm currently in 中级班 at ShiDa.) Thanks!

I'm taking classes at YNNU now as well, and my experience has been better than brenna's. I took classes at ChuanDa (Chengdu) several years ago, and compared to that, the teaching quality here is much better. Class size is also pretty small (most classes have around 10 students; mine have between 6 and 8).

I do think everything really does depend on your teachers though! You may be lucky like me! From what classmates say, I would estimate that at least half of the teachers are adequate/good. Also, I am only taking 3 (out of the 4 possible) classes. I would recommend only signing up for 2 or 3 classes; you can try all 4 the first few weeks and see which ones you like/don't like before you decide which to stick with.

I also think that regardless of how good your teachers are, a lot of learning happens outside of the classroom. I often feel that my classes aren't helping me speak better, but they do provide a framework for practicing. As I've said, I've been lucky with teachers and I wouldn't consider my classes a waste of time.

    • Forums > Living in Kunming > Wellness International Gym - Reopening?

Does anyone know if the Wellness International Gym on Renmin Zhong Lu will be reopening? It closed 'temporarily' a few months ago due to some 'business' issue, and was supposed to reopen in April. It's still dark and empty though!

      Hi elmar,

Did you and your friend end up going on the bike tour? If so, I'd love to meet with you sometime to discuss. I'm planning to do similar rides in the coming months and would like to get some advice from you. Let me know if you're up for meeting for a drink/meal sometime.
