Yes, there are poor areas in Kunming. But if you tutor 8 students together, and charge 12 kuai an hour per student(which is really cheap compared to what a school would charge them for a foreign teacher) then you can make about 100 kuai an hour. Most families can afford 20 to 30 kuai an hour. So making 150 to 300 yuan an hour teaching small classes on your own isn't that difficult if students like your teaching.

So if you work at a school and have to teach 10 - 20 kids at a time, then 100 to 150 yuan an hour minimum is to be expected.

I won't even comment on the college classes with 50 - 70 students...

Right! If you look at Summit School, they want to pay you 80-90 an hour to teach/babysit a bunch of noisy kids. They don't even try to advertise paying 100 RMB, God forbid they did. Tutoring is the way to go unless you find a school that not only pays a decent salary but also have a good manager (a lot of school have very poor management). A lot of the advertised school looking for 'Native English Teachers' have terrible working conditions not only for Natives but for Chinese as well. And some also cheat you after you have worked the month (Haina School, so I've heard)

Absolutely right! Chinese private school has conerned about making money from the poor parents who eager to do whatever they can do for helping their kids even if they did`t care what they have played a part of sad actually. Most of the owner of English private school doesn`t pay more attention to provide a good condition for them because of higher cost cutting their profit besides of the Summit Schoo (I saw ).Now the Summit pays 100RMB per hour with 8-12 kids.
