The university migration to the countryside began around 2003 in both Beijing and Shanghai. It was met with dismay by students who had dreamed of the chance for city living and, possibly, an urban hukou.
What ever the official motivation, most faculty and students believed intercity land values precipitated the move to rural student ghettos.
In Beijing, CUFE built an office building on the Haidian canpus and leased commercial space while undergrads were shuffled out to Shahe near Changping (think Ming Tombs).
The Shanghai Accounting university was relocated two hours, by train, to the West.
As an aside, lookup "Battle of Langfang, 1900" for a perspectives on the Boxer Rebellion, missionaries, imperial armies (both pro and anti foreigner) and the Eight Nation Alliance for examples conflicting accounts of history.
There is no problem exiting China, either via Shenzhen or Zhuhai, for a day visit to HK or Macau.
So to answer you, yes. You can exit China and re-enter the same day on a normal residence permit.
Not sure of the rules about periodic exits mandated by some visa types. This is an odd question for a holder of a 10 year visa as the terms and requirements should be clear.
I would go to the bus company office on 西安马路 (Xi'an Rd.) in 小西门 (xiao xi men). From the intersection of 人民西路 and 东方路,go west on the south side of Renminxilu, about 250 m from the flyover Xi'an Rd is a right turn. About 50 m on the right is a bus company office.
You need to wander around and ask as there is more than one entrance and not all stations are manned. You need to buy the card the fill it.
The north bus station has a street level walk-up window as well.
I always put 50-100 yuan in the card as refilling it was a pain.

Good for quality, but pricey, hand tools.
Be aware they will push whatever they are selling. Some of the staff have no idea about the technical side of appliances.
I went there to buy a stove. I repeatedly told them I would be using bottled gas. They sold me a stove. When I went to my local gas guy, I learned there are at least three kinds of gas sold. Luckily, B&Q did not deliver as promised. I went back to the store and discovered they had sold me a stove they needed to be hooked up to the gas main. I got my money back.
The sales lady was almost in tears, 没有问题!I don't know if it a safety or design issue, but I would think B&Q would know and care.
Last week had an 8:45am flight.
Subway starts at 9am. I have no idea where to catch an airport express bus. Eight taxis refused to go to the airport. After almost an hour standing on Beijing Lu took a black taxi, this dude drives slower than my mother, 120 yuan.
Flight back was delayed so I learned the subway stops running at 6:10pm.
Getting a taxi back was easy, more taxis than customers. Taxi was 87 yuan including 1o yuan toll, airport to Beichen area. Yes, he took a longer route than necessary.
Kunming imagines being a gateway for international travelers. New airport but hard to get to and from it.
World Class Airport, NOT!
Tonight "Peacock", a performance by Yang Liping (杨丽萍), to begin her world tour, 8pm, 100-1680 yuan at Yunna Haigeng Auditorium.
Saw this lady perform at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, in California, in 1995. Quite a good and interesting show.
I'm going to try to make it.
Not so good. Kimchi had a very sour taste. Other food was nothing to brag about. I don't think I would go back.
This bus station is not located as indicated. It is further North!

Every winter since 2004 I've headed south to Banna. First stop is Mei Mei's. Just tell the taxi driver "Mei Mei Cafe" and in about 10 minutes you are there.
Now, if they just had T-Shirts
