Does anybody knows how and where to get a bus card? What are the costs and how does it work?

I got one of these cards from my employer when I came here.

You can get a card that can subject you to all Kunmings public transport, underground and bus, by going to Huang Tu Po bus station (黄土坡) or Dong Feng Square underground station (东风广场).

This card will require a 20元 deposit and the first charge minimum is 30元。 once you've used your credit you can recharge at most post offices before 12:00 and between 15:30-17:00.

The card will get you a whole 0.20元 off your bus and underground trips each time you swipe it.

It can also be used to rent bikes (no idea where from) and for access into some car and bike parks.

I bought mine at the north bus station (not the north coach terminal). Same rates that Napoleon quoted.
The discount is actually 10% so it depends which bus you take. The airport buses (919) are 13 RMB so you get 1.3元 off, and of course the Metro fares are dependent on the number of stations you travel but it's still 10% off.

I would go to the bus company office on 西安马路 (Xi'an Rd.) in 小西门 (xiao xi men). From the intersection of 人民西路 and 东方路,go west on the south side of Renminxilu, about 250 m from the flyover Xi'an Rd is a right turn. About 50 m on the right is a bus company office.

You need to wander around and ask as there is more than one entrance and not all stations are manned. You need to buy the card the fill it.

The north bus station has a street level walk-up window as well.

I always put 50-100 yuan in the card as refilling it was a pain.

Refilling for me is not a pain, but that's because I live right across the road from the north bus station. Very convenient.

I would have thought the cards could be refilled at the Metro stations but I'm really not sure. In other cities there are machines where you can just add to the card.

you can also buy and top up the cards in all of the shops where you pay the electric/water/gas bills. scattered all over the place

You can purchase a card that will work for the bus and subway at the main post office and top up at any of the branch post offices around town.
