Windows 8 Tablets in Kunming?

Taobao generally has places you can buy that provide a 7 day return policy for any reason. At most you'll have to pay for shipping. So if you have someway to verify it's genuine or not within 7 days then don't worry too much.

Also even if you buy a Lenovo computer make sure you're actually buying the full version of Windows 8. There is now a single language version of Windows 8 that Microsoft sells at next to nothing. I guess it's to deter them from selling it with DOS or Linux.

I know Dell does this, and they can let you "upgrade" to the multi-language version or Pro version depending on the model. But the upgrade usually costs more than just buying the full OEM version.

Actually if you can have someone buy it in another country with less import taxes you'll be better all around. Lenovo from the US are usually considerably cheaper, have better specs, and come with the full version of Windows 8.

Thanks again to everyone who replied. I had thought that with all versions of Windows 8 you could easily change the system language - unlike Windows 7 where you need the Flagship version. Hadn't heard of the W8 single language version - something to be careful about.

The problem with a lot of tech gear is that it comes in a factory sealed box, once the seal is broken, there is no returning. That is also policy in many shops.

I was under the general understanding that MOST PCs sold in China came with a generic unix or MS DOS system - to avoid the Microsoft licensing fees. The end-sellers then install whatever <ahem> version of software one desires - typically any flavor of windows + whatever <ahem> versions of commercial software you desire - MS office, adobe - they've got it all (some even in English).

If you buy off taobao - the dealers ALWAYS have a mobile number for you to call to request specific information (albeit Chinese language only). I'm ASSUMING (no puns, please) one can also call that number to request specific software builds...sometimes.

You are right they do, and most have issues if you try to import some documents from licensed MS software. I have had problems with both ppt and xls files.
Personal choice, I always get licensed software, and since Win7 it is actually affordable if preloaded. Official Lenovo stores do this, not so sure about other players in the market. And you can get official upgrades from the service centres.

Perhaps if I used the unlicensed stuff too then all of my documents would open on other peoples machines. Umm! lesson there for Microsoft perhaps.
