Cool. Wish you all the best of luck finding a place that suits you. When the air pollution and 'cold' of Kunming finally get to you, living in any of the top 100 cities in China are basically out of the question, (up for debate, any 3 million 人口 city in China more liveable than Kunming?) I don't think so. Moving to qujing, dali, or any place like this will have its pro's. Smaller prefecture level capitals are obviously going to have some advantages in improved air quality and less congestion, and generaly have a certain appeal to those that want the 'authentic China experience.'(4 years ago I orignially interviewed for Yuxi but it didn't work out) The truth is, I think most of would like to get out of Kunming for one of the Qujingish towns in Yunnan, but very few of us get to the point where we are willing to give up the western companionship, 'overpriced' western imports, and most importantly employment options that Kunming has to offer, myself included. Kunming is a provincial capital and obviously is heading the same way as other Chinese cities, and we all have the freedom to come and go. But this one-sided whining about the 'cold,' and 'almost western food' and 'overpriced' imports seems a bit silly.

Most of you at least are being relatively objective, however abcdabcd's, 'i'm totally miserable here.' statement is worthless and as the hippies would say 'sends out bad vibes man,' I think it would be best for him or her to just go...the sooner the better.

Blobbles and Liumingke, complaining seems to be your main purpose of commenting on this site, almost daily for quite some time now. Why are you still here? We all have 'I hate China days' and it's okay to vent every once and a while, but to be constantly bitchin and complaining and still stay fascinates me.

Sorry sean1, next time I want to write about anything on GoKunming or garner opinions from fellow laowai I will email you first to ensure it passes your standards of what is acceptable to post.

You will note that I have also posted pictures of the new subway stations today for those that may have not seen them yet. I hope this is not misconstrued as some type of attack on Kunming by you, I simply did it for other peoples benefit. Please respond if you would like me to delete. I was not aware you were the anti-fun police and bow down and kow tow excessively to your superior calling.

Also you may notice that on the last "anti Kunming" thread about its air pollution I staunchly defended Kunming as cleaner than the rest of China's major cities. I also said nothing in my original or follow up posts about "the cold", "the authentic China experience", working here (as I don't), "overpriced Western imports" or "almost western food". So I aren't sure why you are saying I am a whiner. I actually quite like most western food around Kunming.

Believe it or not, we all have opinions and a forum is a place where we can explore them. This has obviously hit a chord with other laowai who have lived here for a while, judging by the responses. I would suggest if you don't like a topic of a thread, don't read it. I certainly don't read topics that don't interest me.

@blobbles, just kidding. You described Qujing as soulless and then followed it up with some positive comments that were supposed to be enticing I guess. I've never been there, but it just doesn't sound like it would appeal to me. But to each his own.

Qujing actually have a very nice city wall, some good locally produced food. Also about 35km NW of the city is a national scenic area with wetlands and mountains. Some of the photos on GoogleEarth look fantastic. There is also a campsite there.

Seems to be a pretty common trend around here...complaints versus others telling people if they don't like it to leave.

Some food for thought...in my pre-departure planning Kunming was the highest voted "best city to live in China" on reddit travel (right below Vancouver, Canada). Also came in #1 in an informal couchsurfing poll.

I don't think focusing on the negative helps, but can also understand how some have grown cynical or annoyed. I haven't been here long, and frustration is a daily companion.

Gotta love "I dislike Kunming" threads. They are always popular! The longer I stay here, the more I think the term "Spring City" has nothing to do with weather, but refers more to a rusty coil.
