Cost of living

I usually spend between 3000 and 4000 rmb a month, not including rent. I go out for drinks and dinner two/three times a week at least and cook at home quite a bit. 5000 is definitely enough and will be able to conver rent too if you're happy to share.

It's not enough for some guys either. Kunming's average income is incredibly low. I'm shocked to find out how low it actually is. Scooters, cell phones, and cars still cost the same as they cost elsewhere in China.

You'll often see some putting priority on spending 3-months salary on iPhones, overpriced branded coffee and/or designer bag/clothes and then claim to be too poor to pay rent and buy food.

I've been trying to get our (myself and wife) monthly expenses not top 3000, but to do that we really have to monitor our spending on daily basis.

I'm sure one could live care-free on 4000-5000.

Although, on top of that, there is rent, taxes (if you pay), my international medical insurance and any surprise expenses.

5000 is enough as most people have said. It won't stretch to regular 'luxuries' (like imported foods and eating out, especially at fancier places). If the 5000 needs to include money for travel (without needing to stay in dorms or live on mixian) then it's probably not enough. You can also forget about saving anything much although You should be able to save up for a 2nd hand ebike! so... short term yes but longer term no.
