Best / Worst Kunming Food

HaiDiLao hotpot in Beijing had that strategy for waiting customers. You could easily get full on the free snacks and drinks. Around 100rmb per person.

It doesn't taste any better than other hotpot restaurants, but I guess people like to go there because of the fun and uncommon waiting system.

About the worst things I've eaten in Kunming are hamburgers made with lousy beef, seemingly mostly breadcrumbs - they are MUSHY! - found in all too many pseudowestern cafes appealing mostly to Chinese clientele, including some on Wenlinjie. Worse - actually, quite a bit worse - than even McDonalds - truly awful. I can't remember having a good hamburger at a Chinese-run cafe-type place in Kunming, at least one of which, on Wenlinjie, also has lousy fried rice. Hard to screw up simple things, but some places manage to do so.

@tigertiger Been there a fair few times because as you say it's good and not to expensive. Ideal for lunchtimes :) I love the Thai restaurant (and Dai) there to, mainly for the crab curry dish I always get. Quite a few good places in the Aegean......

In general the Qingzhen (Muslim, halal - there's always Arabic script on the sign) restaurants seems to have better wheat-flour noodles (not mixian, rice noodles), and also good beef. No pork, naturally. Problem with mutton in Kunming, though, which they also usually have - local goats seem to be a bit tough, on average.
Qingzhen restaurants, at least Uyghur-run ones, also have the good flat Central-Asian-style bread. And of course kebabs.

in muslim law it is a mortal sin to taint or tamper with food or water. they will never do anythiung knowingly that could harm people. things like buying tainted food. or using unsafe water. unlike nonmuslim places that will do this to save money.

Ha.Ha. You crack me up. Who is it that's blowing up mosque in the middle east? Other Muslims. Muslims hurting and killing other Muslims. Don't believe the hype. There is no honor among thieves be them "Christian" or "Muslim". Now it fair to say that those with a conscience will not knowingly do this. Those that take to heart what the Koran teaches in regards to food. Trust no one.

thiieving is not mortal sin, neither is jihad nor is fatwa. some muslims dont consider other muslim to be muslim. like some cristian dont think other christians are proper christians. messing with the food is haram

Moslem hotels are good too. There are no prostitutes waking you up in middle of night by calling to room phone at 1am, none of that stuff that you shall put TV on loudest volume, chain-smoke, open hotel room door and shout to your friends through corridor (who also have open doors and tv on full volume while chain smoking). No KTV on floor above and no drunken people coming back from baijiu dinner playing cards. Food should follow the religious standards too, and be fairly hygienic.

Overall these hotels are highly recommended for those who need to relax. You dont get the cold beer in the fridge, but you can go and pick it up from the street shop across the road.
