I'll start on 9th January.
I only have 30% DEET spray and that strange anti-mosquito thing for the electric plug with some solution inside (though I guess it doesn't work on those killer mosquitoes anyway). Is it enough then?
I've heard about (sometimes) annoying side effects from those drugs, but I've had no idea when is it worth using them nevertheless.

I wonder whether I should buy some antimalarial pills (or whatever) before going to the Southeast Asia. If yes, what's a good brand available in China?
My initiary is:
Malaysia - 7 days
Thailand - 14 days
Cambodia - up to 7 days
Vietnam - 14 days
Laos - up to 7 days
All of it overland.

Then I'll just try to exchange some RMB into small USD notes. I hope it's manageable at Chinese banks... (I always die looking at all the unnecessary bureaucracy in China).

Just beware that some of the bus stop names and sometimes even bus numbers/routes are not up-to-date on maps.google.com, so you may end up at a bus stop without a clue how to get to the desired destination. Happened to me quite a few times. For more up-to-date information look at Baidu...but it's in Chinese.
