I have had packages in customs for up to 3 weeks before now. The package arrived in Chengdu in 4 days and then took 3 weeks to get to Kunming. I was told that once it is in customs, it cannot be traced until it comes out of the other side. This may or may not be correct.

If memory serves. With your household registration, from your district police station, your registration is linked to your passport number.

I don't think you need to change this, but after you have exited, and re-entered the mainland you (as per normal) need to re-register you household registration. I needed to take both passports when I did this the first time of using the new passport.

You probably already know this, but for the benefit of anyone how does not.- Keep your old passport in a safe place. The old passport number may have been used for identity purposes, such as opening a bank account in the past, you cannot alter the old records to show a new passport. If you have a Foreign Expert Certificate it may also be linked to the old passport number. If it is a recent change, PSB might also want to see it when you come to renew your visa.
For some travelling purposes, you need to show your most recent entry to China stamp in your passport, and carrying both passports may be needed to book into hotels, until you get that first entry stamp into the new passport.
