Forums > Living in Kunming > Yunnan Thinking and Ways @Yuantongsi. Alien. No negative consequences for the selfish one agreed. Some ebike driver just greedily cut me off with 6 seconds left on my green. I braked hard and didn't touch him or his ebike with two to four inches to spare. In the process I flipped over, then dragged myself limply from the middle of the road to the curb. The other cars where nice enough not to drive around me when they got the green. As for the ebike driver, he just watched nearby to see if I would be able to pursue him. Then took off to finish his day. My day of cycling was lost and spent the next week recovering at home. No consequences for him; some consequences for me. But since this is China and he was in front of me, even after running his red, guess I'm in the wrong, since it's their culture to run reds. I didn't "succeed" in this case.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Getting a cat vaccinated for travel to US I have heard some states have additional regulations or quarantine, so check your ask your state too.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Sending a suitcase to UK I wouldn't bet on 50gbp or 70usd anymore, unless you have a really nice national carrier. But even 100usd is worth it if you fully load it to 20kg limit with stuff you really like or gifts, because it does arrive with you. As suggested you need to do it before you fly, but nowadays even with prepaid, you could get a sticker shock of 200usd depending on flight and airline. Finally, check out what suitcase sets are selling for on Amazon and see if it's worth it just to keep a third suitcase around.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Shipping Computer from China to the US Laptops are cheap on sale, in the US anyways. I've got a cheap one doubling as gaming and media center. Or as suggested just pull your drives.
Or try a different China post and pack the computer disassembled and...
1) Point out there is no battery.
2) Tell them they're sample parts or it's broken and needs repairs at home. Story depends on your visa.
3) If you get trouble about the hard drives, just take those with you. They travel well.
Forums > Food & Drink > Sunday Brunch Locations? @Yuantongsi. I haven't tried this place yet, but it looks alright. I should add the reminder that since it's Kunming, keep expectations low.
So across from KIA on Guangfu lu, another brand new shopping center has opened (this makes the fourth in a year). It has a Carrefour and probably the most variety of dining options of the malls I have explored. I think on the fourth floor above the C4 is the dimsum restaurant. There should be another one or two HK/Cantonese restaurants.
Self-taught villager clears 10,000 mines from Yunnan frontier
发布者Amazing. Props to this guy. Too bad his country's politicians and my country's politicians refuse to ratify the international ban landmines treaty.
Government sues parents to get kids back to school
发布者The children need to go to school. Otherwise the medival cycle of having more children to work to support themselves and the farm continues. Their situation is dire no doubt, but if their children grow up without any schooling, the next generation is left with zero hope and left in the same dire situation. In addition, the children want to be in school. I saw a documentary about poor kids in Vietnam, where even subsidized govt schools still require some tuition. It was heart breaking how the kids had to earn tuition money on the side and go to school, but the kids tried their hardest to scrape enough tuition funds together, because school was some hope in their poverty stricken lives. Sadly, in one case, the elder sister who was good at school and earning high marks gave up her slot to her younger brother, since they had only gathered enough money for one tuition slot.
Bye-bye for now Kunming narrow gauge railway
发布者Good reporting. Those little but very important notices are hard to spot.
Scientists "99 percent" certain SARS originated in Yunnan bats
发布者So Easier, where is the proof, that these bats in Yunnan were the ones that started it? Again, the Guardian article never provides details this. If your only point is that the viral precursor is found in this group of bats, then duh? An Aussie led group of scientists found it in horseshoe bats prior to this Yunnan discovery. I'm just saying until you can detail the transmission mechanism from Yunnan bats to humans, it could be any bat colony in any of those other provinces I mentioned that were the originators.
Scientists "99 percent" certain SARS originated in Yunnan bats
发布者Yes, I did. How does the Guardian article refute my point that other bat populations in other provinces might be viral reservoirs also? And where in the Guardian article did they explain Yunnan bats to human viral mechanism or have any other supporting evidence besides the genetic viral code that bats from that Yunnan cave started the SARS outbreak in humans?
