The next meeting of the Book Club will take place at The Park on August 30, beginning at 6:30PM. The book that will be discussed is Stieg Larsson's THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO.

There was, in fact, a meeting at The Park last night; the book under discussion was THE CHINESE SULTANATE: ISLAM, ETHNICITY, AND THE PANTHAY REBELLION IN SOUTHWEST CHINA, 1856-1873, by David G. Atwill, which covered a period of Yunnan history in which millions were killed and offers a well-researched analysis of the social and historical causes of this very major conflict that does not simply write it off as 'Muslim rebellion'. The Panthay Rebellion has been overshadowed and relatively little known thanks to the even greater slaughter of the Taiping Rebellion in eastern China that was going on at roughly the same time. Implications of the train of causation of the Panthay Rebellion might possibly be applied to certain events that are occurring or have occurred in recent years in China.

How prevalent is it, why is its prevalence rising, and are there grades of seriousness of celiac disease? As for gluten intolerance, isn't it a matter of degree or relative commonness, as is, for example, lactose intolerance in China (note the popularity of ice cream, etc.)? Why does gluten intolerance seem to favor 'the European population' and are you talking about geography or genetics?

Perhaps some Welshman or Scot may have to straighten me out, but since when have Wales and Scotland stopped being British? They are definitely under the same central government, and all are in the British Isles. The usual confusion here is when Wales & Scotland are included under the term 'English', and this is unfortunately the usual term used in Chinese.

Similarly, 'America' & 'American' seem to mean only the United States & its citizens, which is in fact the way most US citizens use the term. This has been annoying everybody else on the two continents for a very long time.

Then there is the ignorance which causes many people to use the word 'Arab' for everybody from Morocco to the Pakistani frontier, and to include virtually all of Central Asia under the same term.

Sounds good. I propose a monthly transportation card allowing unlimited use of underground trains and buses for a set price, as in Paris (the Carte Orange), where it works well.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
