Good answer! A tool for communication. In my 12 years in China I have picked up a lot of chinese from every day use but will never go to a school to learn it. Chinese people speak to me in broken english and I can understand them because we are not trying to build a rocket to the moon. In the same way, when I speak in broken chinese, I am understood and I can get what I want or go where I need to go.

I have travelled to every corner of Yunnan and I know it better than any local. I have been to villages in Yunnan where no one speaks a lick of Mandarin and my wife and friends have no idea what they are saying. The only one who can communicate with them is ME because I use my intellect to communicate, not language.

So unless someone is trying to be a translator and earn an income from translation it is a complete waste of time. For those that choose to do so, more power to them. However, in my lifetime, I have yet to meet an adult who can speak a second language as well as a native.

This forum is like the UN because there are people here from almost every corner of the world. The problem here is NEVER language, it is ALWAYS beliefs.
