Forums > Travel Yunnan > One day in Kunming @ Halli : I would recommend living downtown as the city spreads out quite far and newly constructed suburbs are not very attractive + involve significant taxi fares.
There are very few expats - around 400 for a population of about 5 million. If you are looking for a busy expat life you will be disappointed. OK if you want to socialize with Chinese people but extremely few speak English here. There are two or three English corners which help meet English speakers. No equivalent of gokunming.com ; a couple WeChat expat groups if you can squeeze in.
Food is awesome. City overall safe. Enough parks to keep everyone happy. Transport fairly convenient to get to other cities(flights, fast train). Traffic congestion a major issue. No subway. Air quality overall OK.
Weather crappy, cold and very rainy all winter - no heating zone. Summer mild and pleasant, still very humid.
Overall a good experience if you are willing to get immersed in Chinese life. I am having fun mainly because I have met awesome Chinese musicians. If I stayed in China, I would like to try Kunming !

I am already looking into jamming in a couple bars in Kunming if I can find a keyboard I can use as I don't intend to travel with mine ;)

I changed my plans last week as one day seemed too short to be able to do anything much given distances and the information you shared. Instead, I will spend 3 days in Kunming next week for Dragon Boat festival wooohoooo !
