Those statistics are mind-boggling, what about the percentage of crimes that go unreported or even unpublicized? We are not talking about the newpaper cover-ups. I mean as a purely fictitious example, anyone heard about the recent spree of women being killed for organ harvesting in Kunming? The women were all selling their houses on the internet (so this does not apply to the $2 foreign English teachers who rent). Its a story right, just a fictitious example? The story might go on that the teacher was selling her investment property (again no foreigners) in a near empty building or new apartments. You do not read that in the paper and maybe it is just a story, but again as a foreigner I do not think you are a target. Other than the fact you do not have a house let alone an investment property in Kunming, you would bring too much 'heat' and 'public' embarrassment to organised crime. I know another story about children being abducted in Kunming for forced labor sold to farmers and brainwashed to believe the farmers are their parents. Again, maybe just another story right? I cant seem to find these stories on the web so perhaps they are just rumours, urban legends. Or maybe these people are not important enough to get the headlines but a bunch of foreigners who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time did.
That is my take on the story. I am sorry for the suffering the victims have gone through but also realize Kunming is growing, out of a small city into a bigger one with larger social problems.
Yes, welcome China to the 21st century of wealth and abundance in the form of obesity and type II diabetes and your finite reduction in life expectancy. You may want to get fries with that before you read on. Burger King is joining the ranks of the elitist crappy junk food eatery's across the city that Chinese line up for. In one way having a choice is good, but increasing morbidity is a sad way to control both birth rate and also shorten life span? Why would any government want a citizen to live beyond their income taxable age and then become a burden on a society that is already burdened. Now back to the crossword.
Blobbles is correct; close to Dianchi, better housing, KIA., AKA they have more cash that most other language teachers going off on some religion blogging tangent.
It is that simple. Also, I get the feeling they don't want to live among the Philistines, who sink beers all day down by Yi Er Yi. If you raise a kid in that district they may end up become a junkie or streetwalker as per the districts reputation. But then again, they would be open to the salvation from the same 'Isis freaks' you bag and find themselves again.
Wicker Basket is a charity, who help people in Yunnan with leprosy and also women in sexual slavery get a job and have a life. I personal do not subscribe to the Cult of St. Paul, but for at least the good deeds they do, they should raise a larger band of people to relieve the suffering and plight of those less fortunate in Yunnan. Who else cares? I mean most greedy, penny pinching Chinese are focused on their next BMW. What about social wealth? China is bankrupt.
A few (organisations linked to coffee in Kunming) think it is 'charitable' that organise 'English camp' for Chinese kids where they teach JC/ heathangelical philosophy in a inner hall without their parent's knowledge (or government's).
Yeah really charitable. Secret brainwashing event's for children who just want to learn English. If you were really doing charity you would have time to incorporate it into your business plan (Geezer, do these activities belong in business plans?).
If these businesses really operated under 'market forces' as some people have suggested they wouldn't be 'saving' a whole village who stay behind the cafe counter and the rest in the kitchen talking all day except lunch hour. I don't mind giving to charity as long as I know who it is for and what the organisation is actually doing. I do not support foreign heathangelical 'front's', who deceive children least of all through the price of my coffee, which is really a subsidy for heathangelical ego operations in Yunnan's rural areas. Because you are relatively richer with a more Azure shade of eye colour you can tell Yunnan's rural population which G-d to believe in?
They forgot that there were 'legal' and 'open' missionaries here about 500 years ago up until 1949, and what an impact on Chinese mortality all this JC has done? Don't worry I do not think the government will throw you to the lion's, or reveal you are here as an English teacher or cafe owner in disguise, but really up to something else on the side.
I think they really don't care.
In the end you have about 800 million lowly paid people in China to 'save', whether they live in a village or city. These people work to just survive and their destitute and low wage's help to pay for your all Western dream with cheap plasma televisions, a home in the suburb's, SUV's, and that laptop you keep blogging on day and night, and other amusements such as stroke your heathangelical ego at night as you count the brownie points you get from a penny saving of the poor from your home heathengelical institute of bogus crap back in the West, while you still pocket 1000's a month off their backs of deceived Chinese you are 'saving'. What an ego stroke, I am G-d, whatever comes out of my mouth is true, listen to me little village person. How about a job in a cafe in the 'big smoke' where I will pay you enough to survive, but I will drive a nice car, and photograph you to put on my website and make more hearts strings sway so I can keep selling more alcohol and fries. Stomach that! Worse than mouse poo in your coffee.
Hey laotou, 'grumpy post' have you been upstairs? Airy? That is only if you manage to find a fan that is not broken and face it to the groups of students trying to match who can smoke the most in under 10 minutes. I think you need to be realistic, there are only a few cafe's in Kunming who strictly enforce sections or the whole cafe that is non-smoking. As a non-smoker and someone educated in medical science I wonder why California and other places in the Western world have banned smoking in establishments such as cafes' and restaurants...carcinogens? Impossible, China doesn't have any of these 'Western influences'. Just like they had no AIDS or homosexuals up until a few years ago, but then Western's brought these here as well. It is bad enough there are no regulations enforced governing motor vehicle pollution in this country, why do we have to be subjected to breathing in pollution whilst we eat? It may be your free lunch but not mine. Yours Sincerely, 'grumpy post'.
Its all the hidden sugar, oil, lack of exercise. Good points Dazzer/ Krismoonpie. Tiger, even though there are correlations, a person's weight actually has no reference to type II diabetes. Waist circumference is a better measure (i.e. in layman's terms' the beer gut).
Also China's tea production has increase but per capita consumption decreased. Pu-erh tea is a hypoglycaemic agent, which is in declining per capita consumption. Even though all this is staring the government and medical researchers, medical practitioners in the face, why are things getting worse? Co-morbidities with cancer, heart failure, highly organized urban dwellings and structured society, what better way to control a birth rate than to decrease fertility rates (double the 11%, it takes two to tango, unless the milkman is doing the rounds in your neighborhood); diabetes effects 25% or more of China's population and at the same time reduce life expectancy due to morbid obesity and type II diabetes and associated diseases. I am a medical researcher with a Ph.D. in nutrition and from a herbal (Phytochemistry and Pharmacognosy, 'not black box TCM') and nutritional medicine practitioner working in Yunnan for a medical university in research and affiliated with the Academy of Sciences. Fade diets etc., such as Paleo/ Low carb are exactly that, fads. There is nothing wrong with complex carbohydrates, except laptops and a sedentary lifestyle. Keep a food diary for 3 days and wear a pedometer and you will soon work out what is going on. Also how many people with diabetes consult a trained and qualified nutritionist instead of looking for answers on the internet, or consult a GP sales rep (and they are growing in Chinese hospitals)? Take this tablet and we will keep your symptoms under control. There are literally hundreds of native grown Yunnan food and herbal species that modulate blood sugar and fats. The bottom line is people do not want to eat them. When was the last time you ate Bitter Melon salad? Fenugreek tea? Mmmm, bitter and hard to digest. Or maybe a dash of Gymnema instead of the burger and fries at one of those 'Western cafes' with a 'polluted menu' in Kunming? Have you ever asked for no oil or salt, or sugar in your food here in China? Its like going to war with the chefs. They cannot fathom why someone would not want their food not drowned in pig fat, salt and sugar. Genetic conditioning over multiple generations will 'weed' out the weak and susceptible, keep the Minoans distracted and diseased (easier to control) and Like Americans in the 80's, Soda is it. Again that invisible syrup you cant see. Maccas, KFC, and their Chinese imitators are raking in the cash, not to mention bogus medical products on the market. Face it, the sheeple of China are breed to be workers, for their growing commercial overlords. It is an easier way to reduce population within a 30 year time frame. Welcome to affluenza China and social change.
Japanese research literature and also research conducted by Kunming Science and Tech., University clearly state that the phosphate pollution (which provides substrate for blue-green algal growth) is in the sediment of Dianchi after 40 years of dumping sewerage and industrial waste into the lake. At the same time continuing industrial pollution and reducing the water volume via irrigation.
Dilution will not work. Its like adding more water to a cup of water with an ink well in the bottom, it maybe look a little less green, but it is still green. What worked was a little 'green' or should I write 'red' went west to Switzerland. The problem is all the things you can't see in China (the 1% of that 1.5 billion dollars that got spend on discretionary funds), including the source of pollution sitting 4 meters on the bottom of Dianchi lake.
Do not kid yourself, someones friend of a friend got a pile of notes along side the polly who wrote his cheque, and folks that is just the way it is here in China and also back in the West.

China's diabetes rate passes 11 percent

Government undertaking aims to flush Dianchi clean
