I'm with Voltaire on this one. I love living here for the obvious reasons (generally great weather, access to a ridiculous array of travel options), but I also enjoy Yunnan for the lack of pretentiousness in both the local and foreign communities.

The local food here is better and more varied than anywhere else (you just have to look).

Yes the traffic is often enraging and Kunming needs to work on preserving what is left of its air quality, but in general, for those choosing to live in a major city in China, this place beats the rest on character and charm alone. For me at least.

First off, my apologies for approving the classified initially. It is against GK policy, and I somehow missed it. The classified has been deleted.

Shame on me indeed. It was a huge error in judgement born out of frustration and grumpiness. Regardless of the reasons, what should have been a simple correction is instead now a glaring mistake. It was amateurish, dishonest and petty. Unfortunately this reflects badly on GoKunming when it should reflect badly on me alone. My apologies to @ludwig and to GoKunming's readers.

Gao Xingjian was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 2000. Although born in China in Jiangxi Province in 1940, he became a French citizen in 1997. There is no controversy – the Nobel Foundation recognizes Gao as French, as does the Chinese government. If you want to quibble, Gao was the first Chinese-born winner of the prize. Mo is the first Chinese citizen, as it clearly states in the article's final paragraph.

@Yuantongsi:
After considerable discussion between Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and China, it was decided that because the murder victims were Chinese nationals and the killings took place on Chinese vessels, the defendants should be tried in China.

Passable no-frills Dongbei food including lots of dumplings, tofu, disanxian and other standards. Fair prices too.

A pleasant surprise hiding inconspicuously inside the Second Ring Road. Go for the temple, stay for the lovely forested park and its ample solitude.

Had the buffet here recently. A bit expensive but discounts are available for groups. Seafood, including crab, lobster and sushi were all fantastic. European and Chinese dishes were great as well. Beer was included with dinner. Overall, excellent service and food.

Excellent dumplings for omnivores, vegetarians and carnivores. This is a hole in the wall joint with no frills, but the owners are friendly and the dumplings are just right. Five stars if they get higher quality vinegar.
