As China began to develop and the economy grew the government adopted adopted the mantra of development is primary and environmental degradation was inevitable and merely reflected progress. Tree hugging activists and protester were regularly detained.

As polluting is an economic decision, the government closed it's eyes and permitted dirty growth in the pursuit of GDP. Some day the pollutted chickens will come home to roost. Hopefully they will not glow in the dark.

@Xiefei: You are absolutely correct: China tax law is, relative to US tax law, extremely simple. I would say the intrinsic simplicity of terms begets problems with interpretation. and application. This results in very uneven enforcement.

The US, and most countries, establish a central tax authority and regional tax offices are required to follow decisions on enforcement and application by the central bureaucracy. In China, local tax bureaus make the decisions.

I would prepare worksheets for various situations printed on paper and visit three tax bureaus on Beijing. With identical facts and questions I could get answers, corrections and insight. For laowai, there was inconsistent results in calculating tax due. To be fair 2 of 3 bureaus were consistent while the third was not laowai friendly. (The US IRS has similar problems)

Eventually, I found that asking precise questions, or the right question, was the biggest variable. If I was not clear or did not have a good idea of the answer, the answers varied a lot more.

Yeah, I know it is an IME. My problem is that it produced the traditional instead of the simplified and I took as a different character. I should have gone to my Pleco and checked it.

Mei Mei Cafe is great!

Orchid, and her sister, run a great place. Good food, lots of free advice on where to go and how to get there. Want a tour, need a car, a ticket? See Orchid, she's the tall beautiful lady.

Every winter since 2004 I've headed south to Banna. First stop is Mei Mei's. Just tell the taxi driver "Mei Mei Cafe" and in about 10 minutes you are there.

Now, if they just had T-Shirts

Good for quality, but pricey, hand tools.

Be aware they will push whatever they are selling. Some of the staff have no idea about the technical side of appliances.

I went there to buy a stove. I repeatedly told them I would be using bottled gas. They sold me a stove. When I went to my local gas guy, I learned there are at least three kinds of gas sold. Luckily, B&Q did not deliver as promised. I went back to the store and discovered they had sold me a stove they needed to be hooked up to the gas main. I got my money back.

The sales lady was almost in tears, 没有问题!I don't know if it a safety or design issue, but I would think B&Q would know and care.

Last week had an 8:45am flight.

Subway starts at 9am. I have no idea where to catch an airport express bus. Eight taxis refused to go to the airport. After almost an hour standing on Beijing Lu took a black taxi, this dude drives slower than my mother, 120 yuan.

Flight back was delayed so I learned the subway stops running at 6:10pm.

Getting a taxi back was easy, more taxis than customers. Taxi was 87 yuan including 1o yuan toll, airport to Beichen area. Yes, he took a longer route than necessary.

Kunming imagines being a gateway for international travelers. New airport but hard to get to and from it.

World Class Airport, NOT!

Tonight "Peacock", a performance by Yang Liping (杨丽萍), to begin her world tour, 8pm, 100-1680 yuan at Yunna Haigeng Auditorium.

Saw this lady perform at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, in California, in 1995. Quite a good and interesting show.

I'm going to try to make it.

Not so good. Kimchi had a very sour taste. Other food was nothing to brag about. I don't think I would go back.
