Forums > Food & Drink > Suffer from gout?

Thank you, Outsider. Chinese doctors have given me wildly varying (and contradictory) lists of foods to avoid in the past, but your list tallies with those I've seen online (except mushrooms? not seen that one before). I take Allopurinol daily and Ibuprofen (and Colchicine) when I have an attack, so I'm glad I'm on the right tracks there. Have lost 10kg weight over the last year too, but still hobbling! Appreciate your good advice.

Forums > Food & Drink > Suffer from gout?

I'd be interested to hear from anyone alse who suffers from gout. [For those who don't know what it is, it's a very painful swelling in one's joints (often the base of the big toe) caused by a build up of "uric acid". It usually affects middle-aged men and the main reasons are thought to be diet and lifestyle]. I'm actually penning this at 2am, not being able to sleep for the pain. Despite never partaking of the "big three" causes of gout attacks myself - alcohol, sea food, offal - I still get regular and painful attacks. I'm interested to find out if any fellow sufferers have figured out certain Chinese foods that cause problems or, having cut out some food/drink, have found relief from the symptoms. Thanks.

lawlz0mg: Culture and bad habits are quite different. The vast majority of Chinese people I speak to also hate all spitting, public smoking, government corruption, etc. It's just the few who continue to get away with it. Excusing bad habits as "culture" insults real Chinese culture, which is something the Chinese are rightly proud of.

...here we go again. After the last 3 months WITH running water, our neighbourhood once again had it cut off this morning - no warning, no explanation. After the previous 1.5 years of "one hour of water a day", we were thankfully somewhat prepared (we kept our buckets filled). But surely these "lowering of pressure" and "total cuts" could be warned about? My wife is Chinese and keeps her eyes open, but the cuts seem almost random, and certainly not pre-planned. Grrr...

Price is now 100RMB for adults, 70RMB for children.
Some of the animal areas are as far as 10+km from the entrance - you can buy a hop on/off bus ticket for 60RMB per person, but there are also clearly marked walkways for those who are full of energy.

Everything inside is pretty expensive - consider bringing a picnic.

Many of the animals are in large outdoor enclosures. Some are caged. The park calls itself a safari, but this is not a "drive your car amongst the animals" thing. It's more like a decent western zoo.
There are places to handle/be photographed with animals, for a fee. Also, some kids amusements.
The animal show is free, but a waste of time (unless you love watching goats, sheep, pigs, horses etc!!).
Good labelling i English thorughout.

Still worth a visit, especially for the arhat statues. The 11am vegetarian lunch is basic, but still only 10RMB. Free entry.

Prague cafe used to be my favourite cafe in Wenlin area but I went for lunch there today after a few months away and it's really gone downhill (new owners?). The menu was a photocopy, the food was lacklustre and much more expensive than before, the decor was dull and the service so-so. I won't be back there anytime soon.

It's open! And it's free. And its terrific for kids.

The museum is surprisingly interactive (although only 2/3 of the attractions are working) and modern (VR, simulators, touchscreens, etc). Sadly, no English on any of the displays but the fun is in trying to work out how the exhibits work and what they are supposed to be showing. Well worth a visit.
