@Natsymir. above — >>"It's an absolute must, even now that the yaks in northern Yunnan are sick and eating yak meat might be risky."

I didn't know about that. Could you elaborate on what's going on with the northern Yunnan yaks?

Mr. Campo,

I respect what you are doing, and you seem like a responsible, intelligent gent. But as the lone crusader who has taken on the Anning Taxi Mafia, you do run a personal risk.

At some point enough drivers may become pissed that they decide to band together or bring in friends to silence the outside irritant, and you may wind up at the bottom of an abandoned quarry somewhere on the outskirts.

I'm not suggesting you give up the campaign, but urging you to take appropriate security precautions.

"Small tree berries, that look like a large blackberry or loganberry. Black in colour."

Can't be sure, but I think those are 桑椹 (sang1 shen4) — mulberry. Hard to eat, but worth the trouble.

Paste 桑椹 into Baidu image search and see if we are talking about the same fruit.

Bai Teng Digital City 佰腾数码广场 is a big computer shopping mall which has the sort of things you are looking for. It's a short taxi ride from where you are staying.

Quite a few other computer and computer products stores are located nearby on Yi Er Yi Da Jie (一二一大街), Yuan Xi Lu (园西路), Yuan Tong Bei Lu (圆通北路) and Gu Lou Lu (鼓楼路).

Best to take a Chinese speaking friend to help with the language; my experience has been that little English is spoken at these establishments.

>>"does anybody know how these trash pickers are called in chinese?"

It's 收废品 for the people who ride around on the 3-wheel bikes 三轮车 and collect broken appliances. I'm not sure of the term for the smaller-scale "dumpster divers."

The CNAC exhibit, which is on display now, February 2009, is extremely intersting and well done. Worth a trip. The museum charges no admission and the Number 1 Kunming bus goes there.
