I would suggest for train!

First, it's much more clean and you could stay over night on the train, more comfortable.

Secondly, train is safe! I've been to Dali many times via bus and train, and this is my concern!

There are 3 daily trains from Kunming-Dali, hard-sleeper is comfortable enough.

Yes, it's possible, you can apply it when you are in HK, with travel agency, it normally takes 2-3 days, cost about 2000RMB as far as I know from last year!

Hi,

It's not allowed to drive in China, unless you have a Chinese driving license, I am Dutch and I just got one driving license, now I could drive in Kunming.

I think the best way is to rent a car, and hire a driver, or go with a friends who hold Chinese driving license :-)

Yes, there is a direct bus from Kunming to Yuanyang on daily bases.

Ride is all right, about 7 hours, 150 Yuan per person. You can only get tickets one day before depatrue.

Recommendations for hotel would be Yunti hotel.
