Hi guys, I've been in China a couple of years, currently in Yangshuo, and am tired of my crappy pigeon Chinese... so, to that end, I'd like to buckle up, and learn Chinese, propper.
Right, so, Kunming looks like a good spot to do it, and not to expensive either.
Looking at Yunan University... did I spell that wrong?
Few questions.
1. Accomodation, around 1,500 - 2,000rmb per month for a decent place?
2. Air quality, I'm guessing... not too good these days?
3. Local dialect... gibberish?
4. Night life... are there decent bars, restaurants?
5. What sort of monthly budget, after tuition fees.
6. Getting around, bicycle, scooter... busses? Would a scooter be ok? I drive one here, but Yangshuo is pretty small... yet, still dangerous at times.
Cheers
cheapest option, chungking mansions, no more seedy than koh san in thailand, maybe a little unsafe for single female travelers.
you can pick up a funny shoe box room for $150hk, if you bargain.
there is a crappy hostel on the top floor, $100 for a dorm bed, but its a serious $hit hole.
make sure there's no festivals or events/expo's, they'll tripple the price... you could also try couch surfing, if you're hot, you may find a place... alas, this is how couchsurfing had turned out
Thanks for the reply. Is it true you need to pay up to 6 months rent in advance?
So I did a search for renting, and found this... almost a year old.
Is this still the case? Paying 6 months up front... seems a bit crazy! Do you get a reduced rate if you pay up front?
Speaking of which, how much is the rent, for
a) a one bed in good location
b) a room in shared apt, in good location
