But the teacher needs to be able to teach.
Even Webster's latter definitions implies that.
I would also suggest that if you teaching absolute beginners a new language, then being fluent in the students L1 is a distinct advantage. Which is why I would recommend absolute beginners start with a Chinese (national) English language teacher.
Most Chinese people I have taught have studied English for many several years and have a firm grip of English grammar knowledge already. They mostly need help in applying the knowledge.
Most students of Mandarin I meet have come to China with nothing, and need a lot of explanation. Most westerners come to the classroom with questions and expect answers. This is related to learning styles and expectations.
Perhaps you are one of the few exceptionally lucky people who pick up Mandarin easily, or have been able to find a naturally talented teacher.
Remember, not everyone is good at math, and not everyone is good at languages.
NB Correction. First line should read, the tutor needs to be able to teach. As Webster's...
A repeat for the blind or illiterate.
I would like to hear from ONLY those who had prior experience with a private tutor. I am not interested in private schools or universities, only 1-1 tutors.
Sorry, the thread got hijacked.
But I still think my first post was relevant for a comparison.
Yes, your first post was spot on and you discussed many relevant details.
One other issue can be location. I could not find a qualified tutor that would even come out as far as NanYa on Dianchi Lu.
The most convenient location is either at the student's home or the tutor's home. Studying in an outdoor environment never seems to work.
Agree, but I could not find anyone to come out to my home. By location I meant where you live, sorry if that was not clear. And travelling into the city could be a big time and travel cost constraint for some living in the boonies.
Does anyone know how much a teacher is paid to teach chinese at any of the advertised schools? I am not asking how much is the tuition. How much is the chinese teacher paid to teach.
Kcel pays 25 yuan per hour for certified teachers.
