Maybe their English is better than your Chinese. When I traveled through Quebec I would try to speak French and they suddenly learned English.

I have noticed that often Asian looking people in China learn Chinese much faster than European ones, only because Chinese people speak to them only in Chinese and if they don't understand they talk in very simple Chinese which makes learning the language much easier than when people tend to either not even try to speak to you, only speak in English or have a mental block when you speak.

I have also noticed that no matter what their level of Chinese is for an Asian looking person its much easier for them to be understood by Chinese than a European with similar language skills.

@Yuantongsi, that's partially true. Visually, people would think I am not a laowai and would initiate the conversation in Chinese. However, when they notice that my Chinese is average, they will automatically try to shift to English if possible, even if I ask them to give a simpler explanation in Chinese. I would usually ignore it and continue with speaking in Chinese.

It's all up to you. You don't have to give in and also reply in English. Just shake the head nonchalantly, pretending that you don't understand and continue with Chinese. It's quite simple, quick and efficient. I don't see what the fuss is about.
