I don't think any Chinese embassies provide express visas anymore. HK doesn't for sure.

FYI - I just found out for visa photos (in-country), you'll need a certificate that accompanies the photos, verifying the photos are true and blah blah blah (certificate good for 6 months from date of issue of photos).
Only certain photo studios can issue these government-ish certificates - so plan ahead!

Or you get the pics done at the place next door to the Visa PSB, (run by a relative??)
I switched from working to student with no problems: I did not even have to leave Kunming, and this was recent.
If you need one of those photo places, there is one on Xuefu Lu across the street from Xueyun Lu (close to the interchange with Longquan Lu, YierYi and Xufue). Total cost for a set of passport photos and the certificate was 15RMB
Also, Hong Kong does still offer a form of express service: by the next afternoon (just not the next morning or the same day anymore). Hey, one night in Hong Kong can be fun!
Last month i got the official photos with certificate at the photo place opposite Yunnan university south gate. They cost 40 kuai.
@willden
Nuts. ¥15 for the certificate and photos? I just paid ¥40 at the place @mPrin mentioned. Wait - lemme now go whine on the "why do miserable...thread".
Just go to PSB and take the photos there to the right of the front door. Than your photos are in their system digitally.
