To cut a long story short I have been consulting for a registered Chinese company who have now said they would be willing to employ me but are unaware of what they require re documentation to employ and issue a visa to a foreign employee. does anyone have any experience of this or know where I can find out further information. Thanks in advance.
You need to go to the 外事处 and talk to the department that issues working permits 就业证. Ask your company to do this as its a lot of hassle and best that a native speaker deals with it.
If you dont have a bachelors degree at least and 2 years working experience then no hope.

We did this last year a new foreigner hire into my company. I have posted on this subject in GOKM forums. Its a long three months or more, bunch of detailed paper work and documents at three different agenciesin Chinese with certified translations. Two work permits, a Z visa with a trip outside China. PSB application after the second work permit. Criminal record check. Health check. Finally a residence premit for one year. An inexperienced Chinese company can do this but you might suffer with expiring visas, headaches and extra hurry up paper work needs. See my PM for a bit more information.
