Buying furniture

Niconanhai (30 posts) • 0

Hello,
In less than four weeks we will arrive in Kunming, and start living in our new apartment.
We still have to buy all our pieces of furniture.
We would like to have addresses of furniture shops which have a good collection of affordable furniture, and because our apartment is not very big, about 95 m2 we are looking for not very big sized furniture.
So we hope that you can help us by sharing your experience with buying furniture, and help us to find good shops.

Best regards,

Nico and Xiaohong

Not sure of the address, but the 'No11 Furniture Store' has copied IKEA. This might suit your needs for space saving and function.

The only thing you will have trouble finding is a decent mattress for the bed. And beds are the first item you will need.

Thanks for your reaction,

I sure hope that finding a mattress will be possible, good quality sleep is very important.
For the rest, we will spend a few days looking around, and it can be fun to shop.

Greeting

Nico

I went with this one:

item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=0.0.0.35.kRsFBR&id=10771121432

It uses marshall coils with a pillow top. It was advertised as "soft" but I consider it to be medium firmness. This brand is reputable in China, and at least this model seems to live up to Western standards. I recommend to buy online. If you buy at a brick and mortar store you'll pay almost 6000rmb. I tried it out in the store to see what it was like before I bought online. I've been sleeping on it six months now and no complaints so far. Much better than any other mattress I've slept on in China.

Thank you, this is very helpful information.
Do you have any idea what the time needed for delivery is.
If nessecery we can order when we are still in Holland, i would like to have the mattresses as soon as possible after we come to Kunming.

Quite by accident I found a much cheaper option to acquiring a western style mattress.

I won't bore you with the details of how I stumbled across this, but I found that if you use 80mm foam that they sell here as cushioning here on the traditional wooden sofas, cut to the size of your bed, it makes a wonderfully comfortable mattress. We have it on one of those cheap super hard metal framed beds you can buy here.

The piece we have here for the queen sized bed cost 250rmb and is wonderfully comfortable while being quite supportive. If you have a larger frame requiring extra cushioning then you can buy another piece and put them together. If you want something a bit firmer they have firmer 100mm thick foam for 350rmb.

Of course it won't have the lifespan of a good western style mattress, but when you consider the cost saving I think it is a bargain.

From what I recall the delivery time was maybe 3 or 4 days. But I am in Eastern China. The delivery time varies depending where you live. I would guess as this item comes from East China it could take a little longer to reach Kunming (probably not more than 2 weeks).
