I was not able to find one in Kunming last year. Nor could I find a hot air popcorn popper. The only yogurt maker we were able to find was one we had to order from Chinese television shopping. I finally brought 220V appliances from the US on a visit home (breadmaker and hot air popcorn popper). I couldn't find these items in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Beijing or Shanghai, either. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
You can, however, purchase yeast and pretty good flour. Yeast is available in most markets at the stores that sell spices, sugar and flour. Carrefour doesn't carry yeast, but Metro does. In the meantime, pretty good bread (without sugar!) is available at Metro and also at a Russian bakery on Baita Lu, a few doors north of Mama Fu's.
We bought a great Electrolux Bread Maker about a year ago in what's now an sports apparel store on the 3rd floor of the Parkson shopping complex on Rening Rd and Qing Nian Rd. I think I've seen some Phillips bread makers on the fifth floor of the same Parkson right when you get out of the glass elevator.
Until then I think the best bread is at Just Hot on Jian She Rd. a couple of stores down from the movie theatre.
a friend of mine bought a bread machine in shanghai back in 2004. i'm pretty sure they got it from B&Q, which also has a branch in kunming (beichen area) so i'd include that on your hit list.
i didn't know such a thing as a hot air popcorn popper existed.
french cafe's bread is pretty good too, methinks, when they have it. the russian bakery sounds interesting...
Hi All,
I am a newbie on the site: Alain, French. We are a mixed couple, My wife is Dai from Dehong . We are living in Shanghai, but planning to buy an apartment in KM end 2008. (I also have business and house in taipei, Taiwan)
In Shanghai, now,can find bread machine easily around 650 rmb... For example, there is a new Hypermarket in downtown corner of Xizhang nan Lu and Fuxing road, called E-mart, selling this kind of appliances.
I bought mine from a business friend in SZ direct from factory (exported to Europe, mostly to France) at 250 RMB. Already used one whole year: perfect.
But I bring the baker dry yeast from Taiwan, because in Shanghai hard to find, expensive and often it doesnt work after staying too long shelves
