I've read that Chinese families rarely invite people into their home and that guests usually bring gifts.

It is a good idea.
Something from your home town/country is normal. Even foodstuffs.
The gift does not need to be expensive, but it should be in a nice package/wrapping. I have been given $1 products in a $5 dollar gift box before.
Also, if they don't open the gift in front of you this is Chinese politeness. They would not want you to see if they were disappointed.
There are a few gifts you should not give. You can Google these, e.g. clocks, in Chinese culture they are a reminder that time on earth is ticking away towards our graves.
Thanks, I'll try to find something that will suit that description
actually,as a native,I should say "give clocks"has the same pronanciation as "go to die" in chinese,
In my opinion, you could buy send foreign things that your friend will be happy certainly
