Relatively Smoke-free Kunming?

saikyo (13 posts) • 0

Hello everyone.

Moving to Kunming soon with my wife who hates smokey places.

We are aware that smoking anywhere in China is much more public and prevalent than anywhere in the U.S., where we're coming from.

Does anyone have recommendations of cafes, parks, restaurants... or any other places to hang out and study, people watch, or just chat that will be relatively smoke free? Or, at least a place with good ventilation that keeps any second hand smoke unnoticeable.

Any tips appreciated. I know this may be a tall order!

Your right that its a tall order.

Your choices are limited to the downstairs of Salvadors and Mazagran (opposite salvadors) on the corner of Wenlin Jie and Wenhua Xiang and The wicker basket and Silver Spoon in the North near Metro Supermarket. Other than that I'm not aware of any places (including taxis) where smoking isn't acceptable.

We're kind of in the same boat as we've recently had a baby so want to find smoke-free places we can eat out. Good luck!

Thanks Greg! I googled those spots and think I got the vibe.

Too bad that non-smoking is going to mean exiling myself from the local Chinese experience. Oh well, guess it comes with the territory.

Maybe there are eat outside sorts of places where even if it's smoking that the breeze and open air will make it bearable?

We can only hope.

the chengguan (loosely "city management") just forbid the few remaining outdoor spaces there was to eat. Salvador's outside bar space got halved. French Cafe's outdoor tables are a thing of the past.

spring city, yeah, but you should stay indoors all the time, koz it keeps the streets looking tidier.

up until a few years ago (late 2006-ish), Wenhua Xiang was covered in outdoor eating space. now it's just a car park where the fees are (maybe) charged in the form of feeble fines.

i think Prague Cafe does a no-smoking first floor too, at least in their Wenlin Jie location.

I suddenly realize that you'll have no problem eating at 90 percent of Chinese restaurants in Yunnan. Open air and a breeze is common here since most places have a whole wall opened up to the street.
